How to Prepare for the Death of a Loved One

Financial Toll of Being a Caregiver

Being the caregiver of a loved one is a a duty that many of us will eventually assume. While rewarding, it can also take a toll on you financially.   Even if your loved one has adequate insurance and resources it is next to impossible not to dip into your own pocket to have to pay for smaller items such as postage, shipping costs,  household necessities, groceries and even certain medical needs that are not covered under the insurance policy.

In one year alone I spent over $12,000 in out-of pocket.   Sometimes its is not convenient to pay for all the smaller items you purchase by writing a check from the account of the loved one even though you are a Power of Attorney.

For example: in 2010 alone I spent $572.00 in postage, copies and certified mail covering over 106 different occasions with the average cost of $5.39.  Since Be sure to maintain receipts and detailed copies of all monies spent.

Here are just a few of the items that were paid for out-of-pocket:

Postage, Office Supplies, Copies, Certified Mail

Medical Care / Equipment and Supplies

Household Expenses / Repairs

Legal Fees

Groceries / Food Items

Storage Fees

SimpleWills.net advises that you seek the help of an Elder Law Attorney to assist you in developing a solid plan as soon as you assume the role of Caregiver.
